OUr Story

It started on the beach

The idea for Constructables started when my son and I (ok, mostly me) were digging tunnels on the beach together in 2021. At the time, I was working on City Rail Link, one of the largest tunnelling projects in New Zealand at the time. I thought it would be cool to have realistic ground-engineering toys to play with. And thus Constructables was born.

Forming the Idea

Coming from a background in structural engineering and construction management, I wanted to create a toy that was real and didn't play down to children. My mission was for Constructables to be fun to play while at the same time teaching about real construction.

Prototyping

The first prototypes were cardboard, but quickly turned to 3D printing. Eventually, after a lot of product testing, we settled on bridges and buildings as the most accessible starting point.

We developed heaps more sets along the way that we can't wait to share with you in the future.

Choices

It took 4 years of product development with countless iterations to get to the product you see today. Every part is meticulously engineered with various learnings possible for each part, all while maintaining ease of use.

Even the colour has a purpose - some structures integrate with the environment (such as our green bridge) while others might be bright to be more noticeable for various reasons.

Developing our educational offering

We launched our first product in December 2024 and since then have worked with schools, educational organisations, libraries, and more. Our mission is to work with people to further students' learnings in STEM. This requires us to work together to get continuous improvement in our educational goals. Along the way, we have developed new lesson plans, products, and goals.

Marketing is new to us - we are engineers and teachers after all - but that doesn't stop us from doing a few photoshoots!

What's next

We have several tranches of development at Constructables:

  1. Educational content
  2. Applying technology
  3. New product development

We have lots of new goodies in store and can't wait to share them with you. If you would like to get involved - please get in touch!

Our Fundamentals

Fun

New Zealand Based

STEM Education

We believe that engineering should be fun and accessible to everyone. Constructables are different and exciting to play with. The are realistic, which makes your creations look the part and play the part too! They are incredibly strong when built in a structurally sound way.

This is how we hope to excite and inspire the future generation of engineers.

STEM Education

Construction and engineering can teach us a lot about how the world works. How we are able to make things stand up, cross rivers, go underground, build skyscrapers.

It is a practical way of working with physics to produce some amazing structures.

Playing with construction toys is a great way to learn about our world.
